The Dibrugarh OPD — afternoon session for Upper Assam and the Arunachal side
Dibrugarh is Upper Assam's medical hub, home to Assam Medical College & Hospital, where Dr. Agarwal did his MBBS. Many people here have already been admitted or investigated by the time they see a gastroenterologist. The Dibrugarh OPD is the second half of Dr. Agarwal's 3rd-Saturday circuit and is especially useful for follow-up after a hospital stay.

Reaching Apeksha Hospital
- AMC Road is the road leading to Assam Medical College & Hospital; Apeksha Hospital is in the Jalan Nagar stretch. Use the map link above and ask autos or cabs for "AMC Road, Jalan Nagar".
- From Mohanbari airport: the airport is outside town (roughly 15 km); a cab to AMC Road is the quickest option.
- By train: Dibrugarh is the end of the line for long-distance trains from Guwahati; from the station it is a short auto or cab ride.
- From Tinsukia, Moran and Sivasagar: allow one to two hours by road depending on traffic and the season.
After a hospital stay — what the OPD is for
Many people reaching a gastroenterologist from Dibrugarh arrive with a discharge summary in hand. The OPD is built for exactly that situation.
| You were told… | What the OPD does |
|---|---|
| "Cirrhosis with varices" or "had bleeding" | Schedules a repeat endoscopy and banding at Hayat in Guwahati, checks medicines (beta-blocker), and sets a 6-monthly ultrasound and AFP plan to catch liver cancer early. GI bleeding guide |
| "Jaundice, stone in the bile duct" or "dilated duct" | Reviews the MRCP and decides if ERCP is needed; arranges it at Hayat. About ERCP |
| "Pancreatitis" or "pancreatic cyst" | Looks at the scan, the cause (stones, alcohol, triglycerides) and whether EUS is needed. About EUS |
| "Fatty liver", "raised SGPT" | FIB-4 scoring; FibroScan arranged in Guwahati if needed. Fatty liver guide |
| "Ulcer", "gastritis", "H. pylori" | Confirms the cure of H. pylori and reviews alarm symptoms for endoscopy. Acidity guide |
Bring the whole file. Discharge summaries, endoscopy pictures and reports, CT and MRCP films or discs, and a list of every medicine. Photographs on WhatsApp ahead of the visit help us tell you in advance whether you need to come to Guwahati urgently.
Flying or taking the train to Guwahati for a procedure
Dibrugarh has the best connections of the four outreach cities. That changes how a procedure is planned:
- Decide at the OPD which procedure you need and the date.
- Flights: scheduled flights connect Dibrugarh and Guwahati in about an hour. Check the current timetable and fares; book once the date is fixed.
- Train: overnight trains from Dibrugarh reach Guwahati in the morning, in time for an 8 AM slot at Apollo Ulubari.
- Fasting: if you fly in on the day, plan the fasting and bowel preparation around the flight; we will tell you what to take and when.
- Return: unsedated endoscopy patients can usually fly back the same day; ERCP and EUS need admission and a family member.
The Tinsukia and Dibrugarh OPDs share the same day, so families travelling together can decide at either clinic.
Why a baseline check is worth it in Upper Assam
Oesophageal and stomach cancers are among the leading cancers reported from Assam and the Northeast. Tobacco (including chewed forms), betel nut and very hot drinks are the risk factors most often cited. For the liver, chronic hepatitis B and alcohol are the main causes of cirrhosis in this region. So for anyone with persistent upper-gut symptoms, an endoscopy is sensible; and a one-time hepatitis B blood test is worth doing even if you feel well.
Booking the Dibrugarh OPD?
Send your discharge summary and reports on WhatsApp so we can plan before the visit.
Do not wait for the outreach date if you have:
- Vomiting blood, or black, tarry stools — read what to do
- Yellow eyes with fever, shivering or tummy pain — what it means
- Severe or worsening abdominal pain, a rigid tummy, or repeated vomiting
- Confusion or unusual sleepiness in someone with liver disease
Go straight to the nearest emergency department in Dibrugarh. Assam Medical College & Hospital and private hospitals on AMC Road provide emergency care around the clock.
